DIY Floating Shelves

Our living room was lacking symmetry, shelves and storage.

I ordered cabinets to flank the fireplace. They provide ample storage for our grandkids toys and more. Here’s my affiliate link for the exact cabinet https://amzn.to/4r8Zgc4

The shelves are 59” long. I decided to add 2 shelves per side the same length as the cabinets. I taped off the measurements to make sure I liked how it would look.

After considering several options at Lowe’s this was the most budget friendly option to get the look I wanted. Your measurements may be different depending on what size you want.

I purchased

• (2) 1x6x12 for primed crown molding at $22. *Lumber wouldn’t cut crown so I cut it at home. I got 2 shelves out of each board.

• (4) 1x6x6 whitewood boards at  $9.56 each

• (4) 1x2x6 whitewood boards  $3.58 each

• self drilling drywall anchors

• white caulk

Tools needed

• level

• tape measure

• drill

• saw

• brad nailer (and/or wood glue)

• paint and paint brush

I cut all of the 1×6 and 1×2 boards down to 59” with my miter saw. Lowe’s will cut these boards for you before you leave the store if you ask.

The 1×6 serves as the front. The 1×2 forms the shelf. I used wood glue to attach the 1×2 to the edge of the 1×6 as shown. Next I shot a few brad nails into them to secure the pieces.

I painted the 1×2 shelf pieces, sides and edges of the 1×6.

I cut the primed crown molding down to 59” pieces. I gave them a coat of paint as well. These get attached last and are just sitting on top drying.

All of the natural wood you see here will be covered by the decorative crown molding.

I drilled through my 1×6 at the center and sides. If I struck a stud YAY! If not, I backed out the screw added a self drilling drywall anchor and then screwed the shelf to the wall. You can add as many screws as you want or feel you need since it’s all covered.

Once you’ve secured the shelves use wood glue and tape or your brad nailer to attach the crown. Make sure to attach them all in the same direction.

Aren’t they so custom looking???

Can you believe they cost just under $25 each???

Go build some!

Cheers- Kristen
