I was recently lucky enough to visit the flagship Terrain store near Philadelphia. Home goods, garden supplies and glorious terrariums. I could hardly wait to make my own when I got home.

I looked around my house for glass vessels. Your terrariums can be open or closed. Check your own home, Good Will and Walmart for potential vessels.

When making a terrarium you will need to use layers of supplies. I found sand and small rocks at the Dollar Tree. They have glass jars and vessels too.

You can layer sand, shells, sheet moss, stones and Spanish moss and sterile potting soil. All of these can be found at Lowe’s or Walmart. What you choose to use is up to you-be creative.
If you don’t want to run all over town gathering supplies you can order supply kits. Here’s my affiliate link for one we used many moons ago https://amzn.to/42oA0n4

The only item I couldn’t find locally for pick up was activated charcoal. This is essential for closed terrariums. I ordered mine online and here is my affiliate link for it https://amzn.to/3Yfa8Jp

I found an assortment of small plants for the terrariums at local plant stores, Walmart and Lowe’s.

Step 1
Start with gravel, stone or shells for drainage. The taller the container the thicker the layer. Fill your drainage layer halfway up with water.

Step 2
Add sheet moss or Spanish moss over the drainage layer.
Step 3
Add a layer of activated charcoal to help with any odor.
Step 4
Layer a few inches of sterile potting soil to fully submerge the plant roots in.
Step 5
Add 3-5 plants- most of mine have 3 plants.

I added Spanish moss on top and a Japanese pagoda in this one.

2 plants and a Hindu rope I’m trying to revive.

I can close this one with a floating ball from Japan or open it to release humidity.
Place your terrarium in a bright location and mist when dry.
