This was our fireplace up until a few days ago. It had remained untouched since we moved in 2 years ago except for replacing the gas insert.

The tone on tone colors made the brick surround blend in rather than stand out.

SUPPLIES

1. Latex paint
2. 2″ angled paint brush
3. Painters tape

I was painting our sectional with the color Aspen Stone by the Magnolia paint line.  I decided that it would look nice to also paint the fireplace to tie the two spaces together.



Painting brick is quite a work out. The brick is very porous with lots of nooks and crannies. I was using a 2 inch angled brush and had to pounce it over the bricks to get the paint to fill in the holes. I taped the edge of the mantle and along the floor. Because it was so porous I did not use a roller and used my brush to really work in the paint.

To my delight it only took one coat. Using quality paint may cost a little more but you won’t need to use as many coats and it’s rarely runny or drippy.

I love to use Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams paints. This was my first time trying the Magnolia paint line which is made by Kilz. The quality was very good and I would use it again. 

I will likely paint inside the firebox with a heat resistant paint in time. I used a rustoleum high heat spray paint when I painted our fireplace upstairs prior to the gas insert.

Sine the gas insert is in place and pilot light is on I can’t use the spray paint. I found this brush on high heat paint at Walmart but only in black -I’m not sure I want to use black OR if there are other options.

I bought it, will research if it comes in other colors and can always return it. I noticed it is oil based so u grabbed cheap throw away brushes too. I’ll edit to add a picture when/if I paint inside the firebox.

I absolutely love that the fireplace stands out and takes center stage. The moody dark bricks also make a beautiful backdrop for plants and decor.

Can’t wait to decorate it for the holidays and to hang out by the fire this winter!
