When we moved back to Virginia we didn’t have many homes to chose from. This one was EXACTLY where we wanted to live and on a good lot.
There wasn’t anything wrong with it. It was just so PLAIN and needed some added dimension.
I painted the side lights of the front door black like the front door. That made the entire entryway appear larger. We also had a storm door added to let more natural light inside the front entryway.
Window boxes were an easy way to add some dimension for a low cost.
I mounted them to all of the upper windows and refresh them seasonally.
In the summer the sweet potato vines and ivy almost reach the windows below. I use gel beads inside to keep them hydrated too.
Landscape lights make a huge impact at night. We added 2 low voltage transformers for spotlights and pathlights all along the front of the house and in the nearby gardens.
I found extra large house numbers for personality and a modern twist. At first they were mounted over the front door. The house numbers came in handy for the fire department when I hit the gas line on the riding mower 😬. The emergency services really liked my big house numbers!
We decided to have a portico built to extend a structure over the front door. This was both practical and aesthetically pleasing….and costly. I figured it was the one and only structural change we would make to the front so it was worth it.
We also removed the existing landscaping in the front beds. I had the plants moved to another garden and refreshed those small beds along the sidewalk.
There was just so much blah. The tan trim and garage doors made me crazy.
I painted the garage doors black. The shutters and door were already black and now the garage doors match. {I have a blog tutorial for this DIY too!} I also moved the numbers over here when the portico went up. They stick to the brick with double sided foam.
Our trim was off white and I like a crisp black and white combination. To refresh things all of the trim work was painted white and the gutters were painted black. It’s so much brighter and a little more modern.
In the back of the house there’s a vinyl wrapped addition. It also had an odd room made with lattice. That was removed, cement laid and in came our hot tub.
Here is the back after everything was painted. So.much.better.
